Class Information

About English Language Arts

This is a required class for all sixth grade students and it includes all elements of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.  Students will progress through the writing process as they plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish different types of writing including narrative, informative/explanatory, and argument.  Students are required to draw upon and write about evidence from literary and informational text.  Short research projects will also be conducted throughout the year.  Students will recognize variations from standard English in his or her own and others' writing and speaking and use this knowledge to improve their own language use.

Students will learn essential comprehension skills and strategies while reading closely and citing evidence from grade-level fiction and nonfiction text.  They will develop a rich vocabulary of complex and sophisticated words and use them in writing and speaking.  Through self-selected reading, students will explore topics and authors of their choice and a variety of genres.

Students' progress can be monitored regularly through PowerSchool.  Progress reports go home twice during each grading period.

Students will have weekly homework which is their Article of the Week.  They have weekly vocabulary based on the reading that we are doing.  Students should be reading their independent reading books nightly.

We are using the platform, Edmodo, to complete and submit some assignments in class as well as for homework.  It is imperative that you have your iPad each day and that it is fully charged when you come to school.
